Roadside Memorial of Laura J. Maness : :
 |
Delray Beach Fla. -- While
driving north on Florida's Turnpike, Laura Maness never
imagined what was about to happen.
On December 13th, 2002 - a 9,000 gallon gasoline tanker truck
rear-ended Laura's car. The force of the impact
catapulted Laura's vehicle over the railing and into the
canal.
Laura's car plummeted to the bottom and she drowned
as the result of the crash. |
She
left behind five children and a loving husband that was not
going to let this go unnoticed.
I learned that Lawrence Maness pursued a permanent way to
commemorate the loss of his wife. Through Florida Senate
Resolution SR1138,
State Senator Campbell helped Lawrence and his family designate
May 8th 2004 an official "Spouse's Day."
This day was officially designed to continue the tradition
that Lawrence has had with his wife and family since 1987. Every
year, they would set aside the Saturday before Mother's Day to
honor her and to provide recognition for her devotion to her
family.
That tradition will now be honored publicly as well.
Her death could have been prevented, but without it's existence
we
could not have learned of her dedication and her husband's
devotion to her. I would not have known of the angels; the
butterflies; and the birds that her family dedicate to her
memory.
I now have a tiny glimpse into their life and I can imagine...
The possibility of...
love and devotion fully expressed and now possible for me
- because of Laura. |
More & more these signs are dotting the edge of the highway.
These signs - 'descansos'
(Spanish for 'place of rest') along the highway stand as symbols
of love, remembrance & celebration of life.
